Patient and Experienced Yale Grad for English, ESL, and Math Tutoring
Welcome students and parents, and thanks for visiting my profile! I focus on one-on-one and group tutoring that is not only mindful of individual goals and fun, but also rigorous and effective. After graduating with a B.A. from Yale, I used my skills as a writer and spent 20+ years successfully writing for and educating the clients of various financial service companies. I have changed my career, however, so that I can help others write and understand English better.

Testimonials
Tibizay M. from Bronx, NY She is the most patient, caring human being I ever met. My son is learning tremendously. My family is really glad with her tutoring. She is the best.
Aki S. from New York, NY Ms. Cheri always listens to me carefully, and She gives me study resources, advice and reflections related to my requests. She is polite and friendly, but she has never been just a conversational partner. Her advice is rational, educated and informative, so it motivates me to study more. I don't feel nervous about making mistakes in front of her and it is easy to ask her about questions that I can't ask other people. I appreciate her and I want to study with her as long as I need a tutor.
Bernardita S. from New York, NY She is very responsible and everyday she is very punctual. I enjoyed Cheri's class because she is concerned with helping me from the first lesson. She is a very optimistic and funny person. She has many stories and I can talk to her for a long time.
Somansu D. from New York, NY Cheri is kind, generous and has a great understanding of children. She is very attentive to detail and has been very good at developing the learning skills of my daughter in a very short period of time. I have no hesitation in recommending her.
Tina M. from New York, NY Cheri is excellent! It has only been a few weeks and I can already see a great improvement in our 9yr old girl that Cheri has been tutoring. The lessons are fun but very effective, our girl is at ease with Cheri and enjoys every session of tutoring with her so much that she asked for the sessions to be longer. Cheri has helped her improve in spelling, writing and all aspects of ELA. We look forward to working with Cheri. After our summer break, we plan to have her tutor our girl throughout the upcoming school year, as we have found Cheri's tutoring to be a method that gets great results, with great focus on having the child be happy while learning. Best decision ever, choosing Cheri.
Marcelo S. from New York, NY Cheri is an excellent writing tutor. She is very patient and understanding and works with the student every step of the way to make sure he/she fully understands what is being taught. I particularly like the way that she interacts with students. Every meeting, we go over the lesson and she explains the use of vocabulary and corrects any grammar errors. I notice that she always takes notes and is always willing to help me by clarifying any question that I might have. I highly recommend her.
Riccardo C. from Forest Hills, NY Cheri has been teaching to my nice and nephew for 3 weeks and she has done an outstanding job. I was stupefied by the amount of creativity she pours into her job and her ability to keep calm and smooth even when the scholars are not responding as much! As a matter or fact, they don't really speak English being 12 years old and Italian, they only studied some English at school but speaking it is a very different thing. So I can only imagine how getting anything out of them must feel like! Well, great job Cheri. Even the kids were progressively falling in love and having fun with your teaching methods! Best, Riccardo.
Anna L. from Middle Village, NY It?s been a pleasure working with Cheri with my writing skills and basic grammar. She doesn't make me feel uncomfortable or judge me if I don?t know or understand the topic. Instead, she would encourage me. She is very patient when I ask her to repeat the topic to further understand the concept of grammar. She is always willing to compromise with my schedule. I would highly recommend Cheri as a tutor.
Smita K. from New York, NY Cheri tutored my 70-year old uncle in improving his English. He had learned English in school and had used it sometimes in the work environment but he was not comfortable conversing and was conscious of making mistakes while writing. Cheri tutored him diligently. She used a variety of techniques including conversations, writing exercises and grammar references. By the end of his 4-5 month engagement in her weekly lessons his confidence and enjoyment of speaking English had greatly improved. In addition, we found a friend in Cheri who is naturally curious about our culture and even tried some of our food in an attempt to get to know us better. Overall we had a great experience with Cheri and would definitely use her in the future!
Xin W. from New York, NY Cheri is patient, dedicated and reliable. She has been helping my son with writing since May. His writing skills have improved noticeably since then. He is more confident in writing than ever before.
Stella W. from New York, NY Cheri is very patient and challenges my daughter (15 years old) to analyze writing responses in Greek mythology. She also helped her in grammar and vocabulary development for preparation of SAT. For my son (11 years old), she is working with him on ELA common core standards and how to respond to short essays. She is also helping him in grammar and vocabulary development. Both of my children love to work with Cheri. She has been working with them for several months, and I see a lot of improvement in their writing.
Naoko S. from New York, NY I had been taking her tutoring classes almost for 3 months. We discussed about what I needed to learn from her and how we could approach to my goal at the initiation class. I offered her to have one hour class every week. My main goals were to improve my writing skills and pronunciation, and understand the Wall Street Journal. It won't be easy and couldn't be completed in only three months. However, you might get many ideas how to achieve your goals while you are studying with her. I think that one of the important things is you really need to be honest with her and if you don't understand, you need to express that and if you have any better ideas or concerns, you need to speak out. Then she always listens carefully and adjusts the direction flexibly. We had changed our class subjects case by case. She has many experiences at teaching and it is not her side business or easy-money-making stuff. She cares about your improvements sincerely and gives you a lot of confidence.
