We like for the children to have freedom of choice and self-expression, to have opportunities for creative exploration, to learn to think for themselves, and to have an awareness of others.
Self We encourage the children to develop a positive sense of self and appreciate their own uniqueness. We try not to do for the children what they can do for themselves, thereby giving them an increased sense of independence. We introduce the children to the school routine (raising hands, standing in line, etc.) Others We try to develop socialization skills (taking turns, making friends, sharing, role playing) and encourage the children to express their feelings in a socially acceptable manner. Readiness Skills We encourage the development of fine and gross motor skills, specifically: fine motor skills … cutting, puzzles, painting, pasting, threading; letter and number writing; gross motor skills … rhythm activities, outdoor play. Language We encourage class participation through informal group discussions, i.e. dramatization of stories and specific units of instruction. Math and Reading Readiness Math and reading readiness are intertwined in everything we do through the concepts of numbers, letter and word recognition, counting, sorting, calendar, size, shape, height, and time. Art, Music, Creativity and Self-Expression We encourage the children to creatively express themselves through many mediums. Creative expression is built on experiences in art, music, the child’s achievements, and a sense of accomplishment.Want more information?
The curriculum of the Kids Corner Co-Operative Nursery School is planned to fit the social, emotional and educational needs of growing, active two and a half, three, and four year olds. By thoughtfully arranging our program around the growth and developmental patterns of our age group, we avoid many potential problems concerning discipline.
It is important to remember that many discipline issues are brought on by boredom, fatigue, anxiety, or any upset in the child’s normal routine. These flare-ups are normal and pass quickly, as the situation rectifies itself. More severe problems require the close co-operation of parent and teacher, thus we encourage our parents to share and discuss with us in complete confidence, any major concerns about behavior and discipline both in school and at home.
