Mary Klama is the Educational Director and Founder of The First Avenue Montessori School. She received a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and a Masters Degree in Special Education from Trenton State College in New Jersey and has over 30 years of teaching experience. She is certified by the New York American Montessori Society in Montessori Pre-primary ages 3 to 6 and Elementary 6 to 9. Her recent accomplishments include receiving the Advanced Level of the Administrator Credential from the State of Florida and receiving a grant with a focus on multi-cultural studies in the Montessori curriculum ages 3 to 6. She was nominated to be in the Who’s Who 2005-2006 Edition. The philosophy and principles she established to help children learn and develop form the foundation of the teaching methods used at our school and around the world. Dr. Montessori discovered that young children have a natural desire to learn and are capable of acquiring an extraordinary amount of knowledge. The Montessori approach toward education stresses the childs sensitive periods. These are times when children are interested in acquiring a particular skill or gaining knowledge in a certain area. The teacher or “directress” directs their learning and provides the needed stimulation for the children to work with the manipulative materials provided for them. They may use them freely work at their own pace and repeat the activity for as long as they wish or move to new activities and challenges.
