Sherwood Forest Montessori

Sherwood Forest Montessori School is a privately owned school and is run by a director who coordinates the program and a staff of highly trained teachers and administrators. All policies and procedures are developed by the director and staff and are periodically reviewed and changed to meet the current needs of the school population. The school offers an educational program for children age eighteen months through grade six. Developmentally appropriate programs are led by Montessori certified and college educated teachers. Our school is accredited by the American Montessori Society and by the National Academy of Early Childhood Programs. Sherwood Forest acts as a model for the training of other teachers for we often have intern teachers working in our programs.

Three regular schedules are offered: half-day from 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. extended day until 3:00 p.m. and full day from 6:45 a.m. – 6:30 p.m. Both a nine month and twelve month calendar are offered. All students are enrolled in our educational program. We do not offer hourly or “drop-in” services.

Teachers are certified by the American Montessori Society. Each classroom is prepared and directed by a Montessori certified teacher. A full range of materials follows the Montessori curriculum as prescribed by the training centers the teachers attended. Most of our staff have been trained at the Houston Montessori Center which is a teacher education center certified by the Montessori Accreditation Council for Teacher Education (M.A.C.T.E}. and the Texas Workforce Commission.

Mixed aged groupings of children allow exposure to a wide range of learning possibilities. The younger children receive much stimulation and are able to imitate absorb and internalize skills before ever having formal lessons. While the younger children learn from the older the older children provide leadership and reinforce their own learning by teaching the younger and acting as models. One of the best ways to reinforce learning is to teach someone else.
