JOY Child Learning Center is a family
operated child care center that became
established on August 1 2006. Mel
Bydalek is the Director/Fine Arts instructor
and Hsiu-Jung (Cher) Bydalek is the
Assistant Director. Together Mel and Cher
have a combined teaching experience of 31
years educating and facilitating children’s
learning.
Mel and Cher Bydalek have taught children
at HAPPY DAYS CHILD LEARNING CENTER
(Houston Texas) and at ENGLISH
LANGUAGE SCHOOLS INTERNATIONAL (ELSI
TAIWAN). After leaving ELSI Mel and Cher
started their own child learning center
business (Taipei Taiwan) for children ages
4 to 13 years old and taught a wide range
of academic subjects with special emphasis
on phonics reading writing and creative
thinking. Mel and Cher encouraged parents
to join their student’s classes as daily
observers take notes and help their
children practice their new life skills. On
weekends Mel taught drawing painting and
three dimensional design to children
interested in becoming young artists.
Mel received his MFA (Master of Fine Arts)
degree in painting from the UNIVERSITY OF
HOUSTON and has taught painting and
drawing at HOUSTON COMMUNITY COLLEGE
and the UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON. In 1985
he was honored by the ART LEAGUE of
HOUSTON as an emerging artist. He has
also won several art awards was once a
commercial artist and is presently painting
and drawing.
Mel and Cher Bydalek continue to offer
their skills at JOY Child Learning Center
love children and are passionate about
bringing out the best qualities in each boy
and girl they care for.

“Before there can be successful students there must first be
great teachers.”
In addition to the required DFPS (Department of Family and
Protective Services) training hours for teachers JOY’S own group
training program guides and instructs them on how to improve
their caregiver skills and be more innovative facilitators of
children’s learning. JOY believes teaching is an art form
because of the simple fact that it requires successful teachers to
be constantly inventive like artists when dealing with the
differing abilities and needs of children. Children have many
ways of being smart-through words numbers pictures music
physical expression and self understanding. Each child has a
unique intelligence style for absorbing retaining and applying
knowledge. Therefore JOY continually adjusts its curriculum so
as to adapt to the unique developmental needs of your child.
JOY views children not only as young students but also as young
teachers. Why? Because their words actions and demeanor
communicate to our teachers how they want to be taught. Our
innovative and flexible teaching methods help children achieve
their best because we let children help teach us how to teach
them best. Teaching and learning creatively is what JOY Child
Learning Center is all about.
