With greater education comes greater opportunities for employment. At SEARCH approximately 10% of clients applying for employment services did not complete high school. The majority of individuals applying for job training test low in math reading and/or language arts skills.

Most students who enter SEARCHs Adult Learning Center test at the third grade level. These individuals do not fit in the traditional education model that poses strict attendance requirements. Without a stable home and other basic needs these students need additional support and flexibility to achieve their educational goals.

Adult Learning Center

SEARCH provides basic adult education GED preparation case management and supportive services to 80 students annually. Students are encouraged to attend class from 9AM to 4PM Monday Friday and meet a minimum goal of 60 classroom hours within 30 days. SEARCH has also developed a unique curriculum to address the needs of individuals with low or no literacy.

House of Tiny Treasures (HTT)
This early childhood education program provides developmentally-focused childcare for pre-school age children while their parents attend classes and begin working. Most families are residing in area shelters and other housing programs. Nutritious meals education and intensive art play and traditional therapy fulfill student needs. HTT is Houstons most recognized therapeutic center dedicated to providing this unique clientele with essential opportunities to prepare young children to succeed in school.

The goal of SEARCHs House of Tiny Treasures is to equip each child with the skills needed to reach his or her maximum potential and be prepared for kindergarten. We assist families in attaining and maintaining self-sufficiency in order to break this cycle of homelessness. This is no easy task and is achieved with the help of an array of quality early childhood educators and other professionals.

A study released in May 2010 funded by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development found that obedience and academic problems among those who received low-quality care in their first 4 1/2 years of life persisted through their 15th birthdays suggesting the potential for lifelong problems. Studies like this and others throughout the nation underscore the importance of an investment in quality childcare for children of all economic standing but especially for the most at-risk children that SEARCH serves.

To effectively break the cycle of homelessness we must start with the children.
