The premises upon which the Lehigh University Child Care Centers philosophy is based include the following:

  • The Center exists to encourage and support each child to grow to his/her fullest potential in all areas of development thus creating a positive self concept and a realistic opportunity at succeeding in life.
  • The Center exists to meet the needs of all the additional distinct groups that are involved in the function of the Child Care Center including parents students program staff other University departments and the outside community.

An extended family concept has been adopted to provide a foundation for the Center. We feel this to be the most effective model since the traditional extended family which provides support encouragement and assistance to its members has become practically obsolete in todays society. Yet for the working parent and the student parent support encouragement and assistance are vital components helping to ensure personal and professional success.

For children the extended family provides all the healthy components necessary for successful development. The dynamics of the family and their interactions perpetually serve to establish and/or reinforce the identity of self and of that self within an ever changing ever challenging world.
