Since 1950 Bannockburn Nursery School has been a leader in quality preschool education in Bethesda, Maryland. This community-based school emphasizes skill-building in a play setting. As a cooperative education program, our parents contribute by aiding the professional staff in an interactive and mutually-fulfilling environment. Children benefit from the assurance of family while growing and learning. And parents gain valuable insight into their childrens educational and sociological growth.

Students and parents have cultivated lifelong friendships at BNS. Families are united as a part of this cherished school, each sharing in the mission to educate and support each child. The student body reflects the cultural diversity of the area.

BNS is housed in the Bannockburn Community Clubhouse, not far from the intersection of MacArthur Boulevard and Goldsboro Road. There are two playgrounds with equipment, along with large, open, green and asphalt spaces outdoors. Inside, the well proportioned classrooms generously lend their tactile supplies of books and blocks and costumes and art supplies to inspire the budding talents of tomorrow. The classrooms are joined by two common areas, a kitchen, and two bathrooms. The administrative office is open and accessible during schooltime.

This small-town community preschool is an unfolding treasure for students and their families, an oasis that ceases to lose its luster long after the toddler days are gone.

The members and staff of Bannockburn Nursery School believe that children thrive in a program that is developmentally appropriate; one planned for the general age span of the children within the group and implemented with attention to the different needs, interests, and developmental levels of those individual children. This is effectively accomplished in a setting with a high adult to child ratio.

We believe that learning is an interactive process; teachers prepare the environment for children to learn through active exploration and interaction with adults, other children, and materials.

We believe that child-initiated, child-directed, teacher-supported play is essential to learning.

We promote cognitive growth by offering a variety of experiences in the curricular areas of social studies, math, language arts, and science. We encourage creativity through experiences in music, art, and dramatic expression. We promote social/emotional growth by helping children develop self-control, by nurturing feelings of self-worth, and by providing opportunities for them to develop social skills such as cooperating, sharing, and talking with the person involved to solve interpersonal problems. We promote physical growth by giving children daily opportunities to use large muscles, including running, jumping, and balancing. Outdoor activity is planned daily so children can develop large muscle skills, learn about outdoor environments, and express themselves freely and loudly. Children develop small muscle skills through play activities such as pegboards, puzzles, painting, cutting, and similar activities.

We help children successfully complete tasks by providing support, focused attention, physical proximity, and verbal encouragement. We recognize that children learn from trial and error.

Finally, we believe that the cooperative spirit of participation and management by parents creates a safe, happy, and relaxed environment in which children thrive.
