One Head Start’s Approach to Defending it’s Mission

Introduction

Several Multi-year studies have now shown that normal childcare is detrimental
to children and that comprehensive high quality child development programs
have long term benefits for children the family and the community.

Other studies are now showing that good child development cannot occur without
the in-depth day to day involvement of both parents or someone serving in
those roles – and that even a good child development center can supplement but
not replace those parental figures.

So helping parents understand how essential their roles are and facilitating their
meeting those responsibilities is an absolutely necessary part of any good child
development program. It is a job for which child development programs are especially
well positioned. Young parents are frequently seeking out the services of Head Start
and similar comprehensive children’s programs at the exact time that they are rebelling
against school family and other institutions which promote responsible parenting. Child
development programs help young parents reconnect with these institutions by providing
the parents a service they need and by providing a culture in which acting in the interest
of one’s own child is expected and supported. Good Child Development programs
