We are proud to announce Childrens Discovery Center South is now open and enrolling ages 6 weeks to 5 years old and school age summer camp!
Located at 3515 Convict Hill Austin Tx 78749 it is a one acre lot shaded by big beautiful oak trees and has green belt access for hiking. This location will also offer school age after care throughout the year. The summer program will include hiking swimming gardening and pottery! We are now accepting deposits for June 2010 enrollment of ages infant through Pre-K and summer camp registration forms.
Discovery School Northwest will also offer a limited availability school age summer camp this year.

About Our Schools:
We create a learning environment at our school that fosters independence divergent thinking creativity and a love for learning that lasts a lifetime. We believe that learning happens when it is meaningful for each child. Learning must occur in a natural way so that it is seen as play and not memorization worksheets and meaningless drills. Our play based curriculum allows children the freedom to grow in their own unique way. We use many natural or open ended materials and spend much of our day outside.
In Our Classrooms:
- Open ended materials such as recycled items items from nature fabrics real items from home in addition to more traditional toys. We dont want the manufacturer of toys to influence and dictate the use of specific materials.
- Various art media such as markers crayons chalk charcoals pastels pencils watercolor and tempera paints clay wood and different sizes and textures of paper. We never use models but view art as the unique expression of each child.
- Friendly engaged and warm teachers who are well trained in compassionate discipline methods and developmentally appropriate practice for children.

The philosophy of Childrens Discovery Center is based on the image of the child. We see the individual child as having the right to a high quality education. We respect that the child is the co-constructor of knowledge. This means that the childrens interests and their innate curiosity help choreograph our curriculum. We support the childrens exploration of their environment as natural researchers and their need to be interactive learners. We offer children the environment for learning and the provocation to take another look. Our philosophy combines some of the teachings of the greatest educators of our times Jean Piaget John Dewey Erik Erikson Bev Bos and Reggio Emilias Loris Malaguzzi. Our environment is structured so our curriculum is truly child-centered which implies that it is both child initiated and teacher facilitated. We focus on the process of learning in all its intricacies not just the end result or the product. The learner must be trusted and supported to follow the creative processes without worry of what the finished product may be. At Childrens Discovery Center we are dedicated to allowing children the freedom to explore the world at their leisure and at their direction while setting age appropriate boundaries and limits to make sure children feel safe.
