At the core of our philosophy, we believe that children should enjoy their childhood and early learning experiences. Happy and healthy children will become happy and healthy adults. For that reason, every day at Canterbury School brings new enriching learning experiences. The early childhood years are essential for building a solid foundation for social, emotional, physical, and intellectual development. Part of that foundation should be a life-long love of learning that children will embrace throughout their lives.

Early childhood is the period from birth to age eight, in which children think and learn differently from older children or adults. This time is a meaningful phase of life that should be valued and respected. at Canterbury School, we view children as naturally curious, creative, and competent individuals, who should have a hand in the direction of their own learning. As a result, we use a mixture of both child-directed and teacher-directed learning activities. We believe that a childs work is play. A highly qualified teacher must be there to support their learning by being a keen observer, arranging a stimulating environment, and providing hands-on, developmentally appropriate activities and materials.

Since each child has individual differences and develops at his/her own pace, we strive to meet each child at their own developmental level. We challenge each child to meet his/her full potential by providing an adaptable environment and flexible curriculum. In this way, children are not encouraged to fit into a one-size-fits-all mold.
