n recent years a convergence of research from several disciplines has shown that early learning is critical to the overall development of a child. High-quality preschool programs have been shown to benefit children by boosting the kinds of learning and thinking skills that will be needed for later overall development and achievement.
Early childhood development narrows the achievement gap between diverse groups of students and brings benefits to the individual and the community. By age 5 those children without early childhood education were more likely to lag far behind their peers not only in understanding numbers and letters but also in such crucial qualities as perseverance and cooperation. Of 50 children who have trouble reading in first grade 44 of them will still have trouble in fourth grade.
North County Community Services (NCCS) provides child development services for children ages 2-5 at multiple facilities throughout Northern San Diego County. NCCS Child Development Centers prepare children for the formal educational system by utilizing a play-based child-directed curriculum. This educational programming provides children with opportunities for social interaction with peers and builds rudimentary math language and literacy skills. Strength in these areas is critical to building a childs confidence and self-esteem at an early age.
