Center in Roslyn, NY 11576
The Co-op was founded in 1951 by parents from the Roslyn area and was initially called the Roslyn Country Club Nursery School. It was located on the grounds of the Shibley Day School and had 26 children in attendance. It had a provisional charter from the Board of Regents and was a non-profit non-sectarian interracial school with the goal of offering the best possible early childhood education at the lowest possible cost. The school was unlike the typical nursery schools in Roslyn at the time where parents ran the business administration of the school and participated in the classroom once a month.
In 1959 and now called The Roslyn Nursery School the school was registered by the New York State Department of Education. By this time the school offered parent education seminars in the evenings an open house for parents to experience nursery school activities 90 minute staff meetings that included outside experts and a psychologist on staff. The school enjoyed a long-term association of consulting with the North Shore Child Guidance Center and continues to have mental health consultants on staff today.
In 1974 the school moved to its present location at 1579 Northern Boulevard and was officially named The Roslyn Trinity Cooperative Day School. The school was now able to draw from a larger geographic area which enlarged and expanded its classes. There were 3-day and 5-day programs AM and PM classes as well as an accredited kindergarten. Carpooling and busing also began. The efficient carpooling system that is used today was developed over time by the Co-op staff during this time. In 1977 the Two’s Company program was formed. It was and still is an introduction to nursery school for two-year-olds who attended one morning a week with their parents. That summer the Co-op began the Summer Program organized by the staff which included Roberta Burstein a current Co-op teacher.
In 1991 the Co-op became accredited by the National Academy of Early Childhood Programs. In 1995 Lindi Nubel a former Two’s Company teacher with over 20 years of experience in the field of Early Childhood Education became director of the school and serves as the current director. She is dedicated to ensuring the Co-op continues its role as provider of high-quality early childhood education to all students.
Since its inception the Co-op’s philosophy has been to offer children a warm nurturing environment in which they can develop socially emotionally physically and cognitively while building a positive self-image. The programs that have been added developed and changed over the years have all stemmed from the value of what is best for children. The Co-op has attracted excellent creative and loyal staff who have pioneered many of the ideas and materials that have served as an example to many other schools and professionals in early childhood. Such things as cubby pictures a family book song rolls and home visits are just a few examples. We are proud to have offered a high-quality early childhood program to children and their families for more than 50 years and will continue to do so. The Co-op has constantly challenged itself and through this process of re-evaluation has been able to maintain a well-proven philosophy. This is reflected in its history and is what will enable the Co-op to thrive for many years to come. The Roslyn Trinity Co-op is a non-sectarian non-profit parent cooperative nursery school. Our school is licensed by the New York State Office of Children and Family Services and registered with the New York State Education Department. We offer high quality programs for two three and four-year-old children. We participate in the Universal Pre-K Program.
