The purpose of the SACC program is to provide an extension of the nurturing function of the family. The program itself replaces neither the home nor the school, but complements both, augmenting and enriching what each of these institutions can provide. The program provides children with a “home-base,” a place to go before and after school where the staff and environment is predictable and safe.
School based childcare minimizes the stress of making many transitions to different childcare environments each day. It provides an affordable, safe and accessible program with good care and supervision. SACC also provides an innovative community service that improves the image of the school as an institution responsive to children and families. By meeting the emotional needs of children, SACC may help them do better in school and at home.
Montvale SACC believes that the before and after school programs should not be highly structured, rather, have an atmosphere of responsible fun.
At Memorial the afternoon program is free play, out-of-doors if possible, engaged under adult supervision in games, swings, slides or the playing fields. If there is inclement weather, this recreational time will be spent in the gym or a classroom. Snack is served at this time.
We also provide more structured activities such as crafts, board games, group games, creative writing, cooking, and science and nature projects. Children may participate or not, and may play in groups or alone, depending upon their own needs and desires.
Homework time starts at 3:30 p.m. and continues to 5:30 p.m. The children have the opportunity to do their work in a classroom, with one homework tutor and one teachers’ aide. The homework tutor will make explanations of the homework assignments, as needed.
Fieldstone spends the first half hour enjoying the out-of-doors, relaxing and playing on the back playground. At 3:30 p.m. the students come in to have a snack and start their homework with help from the teacher, as needed. When the students are finished, many games and activities are available and are age appropriate.
The program is in session at Memorial and Fieldstone from 7:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., daily, according to the Montvale School calendar. If before and/or after school activities are canceled by the Board of Education for inclement weather or any other emergency, SACC will also be closed.
Our morning programs are staffed by two head teachers. Three head teachers, three assistants, and homework tutors work the afternoon program at Memorial. Fieldstone has one certified teacher and two assistants. The program director is responsible for maintaining the program including all administrative and financial needs on a daily basis and may or may not be on-site, depending on staffing needs.
