Fifty weeks a year during after school hours, school holidays, and during the summer, the YWCA Afterschool Learning Academy offers 215 school-aged children a comprehensive program at six locations throughout Fulton (Cook, Morningside, and Springdale Elementary Preschool) and DeKalb Counties (Pleasantdale Elementary Preschool, Hightower Elementary Preschool, and Shamrock Middle), including our Northeast Intown location.

The objectives of the School Age Care programs are as follows:

  • To help the child learn respect for himself/herself and others
  • To encourage creativity in each child
  • To promote good health through offering a balanced diet, teaching good eating and health
    habits, and promoting motor development
  • To help the child gain social skills and emotional adjustment for daily living
  • To assure that each child receives individual attention, warmth and auditory and visual
experiences within secure and warm relationships
  • To improve the child’s language and cognitive development by providing learning
experiences appropriate to the child’s level of ability
  • To help each child develop skills in self-reliance, problem solving, and independence
  • To assess special needs of our children and families and make referrals if necessary
  • To strengthen relationships between parent and child
  • To provide for an active parent involvement/education component

  • We believe in providing a comprehensive school age program which facilitates the
maximum possible growth and development of each child, socially, emotionally, physically,
    spiritually, and intellectually.
  • We believe that young children learn best when the opportunity to learn is provided in a
supportive, relaxed atmosphere where individuality is encouraged within the bounds of the
    group.
  • We believe that learning takes place where those experiences are relevant to the child’s
    everyday life and environment.
  • We believe the work of children is play.
  • We believe it is equally important for children to develop desirable personal and social
values, to exercise reason and to develop the ability to choose and make decisions.
  • We believe that within the interpersonal relationships of the Center, children should be
    encouraged to develop positive self-concepts.
  • We believe that children need a physical development program designed to encourage
physical fitness, coordination, cooperation, skill development, and sound nutritional
    practices.
  • We believe that the best development of children requires a mutual respect between the
YWCA and parents. Open communication and parent participation are encouraged through
an “open door” policy, frequent informal chats and reporting, parent/teacher conferences,
    and parent participation when possible.
  • We believe in the value of staff/parent interactions and meetings to discuss center
programs, share ideas, and promote parental involvement in their children’s learning
    process.
  • We believe that school and home must work together for the common interest and well
being of the child within the structure of the community and family
