International Preparatory Institute

IPI began in 1978 as the International Center for Child Development and was housed in one building with an educational emphasis on preschool children (ages 2-5). The circumstances which invoked the founding of I.P.I. are linked to a group of Black American women educators – spearheaded by Dr. Vivien Davenport – who saw a need for an alternative for the educational development of children in Southwest Atlanta, Georgia. This model was predicated on academic, personal, social, emotional, moral and spiritual growth. In 1980, IPI was incorporated and began a gradual process of phasing in each grade level of the Elementary School Preschool. This phase-in of grade levels precipitated the growing and changing student body. During this year, Grades 1-3 were added. In addition, a comprehensive testing program, a computer in every classroom, and a library were instituted. In 1982, IPI became fully accredited with the Georgia Accrediting Commission. IPI also received membership in the Georgia Association of Independent Schools and the Atlanta Area Association of Independent Schools. These memberships were the impetus of significant organizational changes. In 1989 the 4th and 5th grades were phased in. IPI has remained forthright in its commitment to provide a stimulating educational environment based on academic excellence. In addition, opportunities are available for students to enhance basic skills with a variety of enrichment experiences.
