Write a messageI have worked in a variety of circumstances, from volunteer recreational coaching, to volunteer Sunday School teaching, to taking care of my younger siblings and family/family friends. I remember in 2018, I was helping organize the Christmas play for my church with my sister and I had noticed that none of the youth group (high school students) showed up to church other than us. A lot of the kids began to make comments asking why my sister and I showed up generally going along the lines of Arent you guys in high school? I thought you dont have to come to church in high school? Hearing this broke my heart because the youth group students did not show up because our church did not have the funding to hire a youth group pastor. Our pastor would have us come to his house on Fridays so we could have bible study with our youth group, but instead, the kids saw us not showing up as a way for them to escape the burden of going to church which hurt my heart. I made a New Years resolution that every Sunday moving forward I would just come to show up and be a good example for them. After a few weeks, I was being relied on as a second teacher and after about a month, the ladies who ran the Sunday school approached me about teaching the nursery kids which I did for the next month or so and then was asked to lead elementary school kids. I thought them until the end of the year and COVID hit. I still go back to set a good example but given that I am in California now, I cant teach anymore. What is interesting though is that in my studies here at Stanford, I have learned just how important it is to have good role models and how children change their behavior when people they admire in their social circles sets an example they want to follow. I want to highlight their social circles because having adults or other authorities set an example isnt what gets kids engaged but rather looking at their peers who they believe are the most popular (using a network chart system). They studied this specifically in terms of bulling interventions but it can be applied broadly, even in child care. I hope to be a good example for the kids who I can take care of!
