I am a rising senior at Washington and Lee University. I am majoring in Cognitive and Behavioral Sciences and minoring in education. I started babysitting when I was in middle school for a few families in my neighborhood. During COVID, I began to become more involved in my local community. In response to all summer camps closing, a friend and I ran a local summer camp in our backyard for the children in our neighborhood. This experience was crucial in the development of problem solving and planning skills in working with children. Throughout the rest of my high school experience I continued to babysit multiple families in my town, but regularly began to caretake for a 6 year old boy with autism. I grew close with him and his family and my work with him is what interested me in pursuing a career working with children on the spectrum. After my freshman year of college I lived at home, babysitting full time for two different families. One of which had three children-a 6 month old, a 3 year old and a 6 year old and the other which had two children-an 8 year old with autism and a 6 year old. This past summer I worked at the National Ability Center as a facilitator of outdoor recreation for people with disabilities. Most of the programs I worked on were groups of 10-15 children with all different types of disabilities ranging from autism to paralysis. This experience allowed me to develop my critical thinking skills, patience communication skills. After three months of this job I cannot imagine a situation that I would not be equipped to handle. During the school year, I work in a child development research lab where we investigate gender role development in children. This has afforded me with the opportunity to meet and work with many local children in Lexington Virginia. This summer, I am working at Skills on the Hill; a pediatric occupational, physical and speech therapy center. I am hoping to pick up some babysitting gigs (preferably consistent ones but sporadic ones are also welcome) in my free time. I am enthusiastic and I love spending time with children. My work at various clinics and camps has allowed me to build a large repertoire of engaging activities for children!
